Commonwealth Edison said it filed a request today with the Illinois Commerce Commission to raise electricity rates about 7 percent.

That would increase the average monthly residential bill by less than $6, the utility said.

The rate filing is the utility's first in three years. ComEd said it needs the extra money to continue modernizing its delivery system and "recover the cost of substantial investments."

Com Ed said the ICC will determine any increase in rates after an 11-month proceeding. If approved, new rates would not take effect until June 2011, the utility said.
