.@johnelway , born with ability to throw a ball and make millions, doesn't believe in safety nets @Broncos @nfl

I respect your right to lean whatever way you want politically, but to not believe in safety nets for the less fortunate is absurd and makes me really dislike you. We all cannot be star athletes and car dealership moguls. Some of us, no matter how hard we try, will only be grave diggers because the system can only support a certain amount of doctors, lawyers and athletes. You were born with talent, you had a great upbringing, and you basically won the lottery of life. But to be against help for those that can't make more then minimum wage is absurd.

Football is a rich man's game. Its unfortunate you need to be so overt about it. I am glad you lost.

"In an interview with Fox News before the game, NFL Hall of Famer John Elway revealed that he has little sympathy for the plight of the poor in this country.

In a interview on Fox News prior to Super Bowl XLVIII, host Chris Wallace pointed out that Elway was a “big Republican” who had contributed “a lot of money” to former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012.

“Why do you support the GOP?” Wallace wondered.

“Well, it goes to what my beliefs are,” Elway explained. “I believe that we’re giving the opportunity to succeed or not succeed.”

“I don’t believe in safety nets,” he continued. “Obviously, we’ve got to have some kind of safety nets. But I think my philosophy is when given the opportunity to go take advantage of that, I think that’s when you get the best out of people.” [source]

So he thinks that obviously we need some safety nets, but he doesn’t believe in them. What he wants to say is that safety nets make people lazy, and if the U.S. has them then people can’t grow up to be like John Elway. He believes that we are given the opportunity to succeed or not succeed. No, John, you were given that opportunity. Many people don’t have the advantages a John Elway has growing up."
