Earlier this week, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) — the target of a vicious right-wing smear campaign — announced that it will be shutting down its national operations and closing its state affiliate branches by April 1. Even though ACORN is now essentially shutting down, conservatives have refused to let up on their crusade against the activist group. Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), in a throwback to an earlier effort to that was ruled unconstitutional, has introduced an amendment to the Senate's health care reconciliation bill which would bar all federal funding for ACORN. Vitter's amendment joins other Republican "poison pill" measures such as Sen. Tom Coburn's (R-OK) amendment to deny erectile dysfunction drugs to sex offenders and Sen. Robert Bennett's amendment to force Washington D.C. to vote on same-sex marriage.
