Former FCC chairman Michael Powell named top cable lobbyist -see how the system works? #p2

Michael Powell, the former chairman of the FCC, has been named president and CEO of the top cable TV trade association.

The National Cable and Telecommunications Association announced the move today.

Powell, the son of former Secretary of State Colin Powell, was named FCC commissioner by President Bill Clinton in 1997, and made chairman by President George W. Bush in 2001.

He had a controversial tenure, in which he pushed for both deregulation and net neutrality and had some of his policies knocked down in the courts. But he is probably best known as the FCC chairman at the time of Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, which ushered in a period of increased FCC fines for indecency and made him an enemy of Howard Stern.

Since leaving the FCC in 2005, he's been a senior advisor with Providence Equity Partners and Honorary Co-Chair of Broadband for America.
