The San Diego Chargers are second in the National Football League in political donations since 2009, according to a recent analysis of federal contributions to politicians and committees.
The study of donors affiliated with the NFL's 32 teams was conducted by the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that tracks campaign money in U.S. politics.
It found Chargers owner Alex Spanos, 88, is the third-biggest donor in the league, trailing only the owners of the Houston Texans and the New York Jets over the past two-plus years for which financial disclosure forms are available.
Spanos has made $121,923 in political contributions since 2009, the study found. The Chargers owner is one of only four individuals in the league to have given more than $100,000 in that period.
Forbes magazine pegs the Spanos family's net worth at $1.1 billion. The magazine listed Spanos as the seventh-best owner in the NFL this week, noting the franchise's value is up 11 percent in five years while the team's five-year winning percentage is 69 percent.
Since 2009, the family has given about $250,000 of its money to a variety of political candidates, Republican fundraising committees and the National Football League, according to the donor database at opensecrets.org.
