Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement - worse then SOPA
"Why You Should Care
TPP raises significant concerns about citizens' privacy, freedom of expression and due process rights, innovation and the future of the Internet's global infrastructure, and the right of sovereign nations to develop policies and laws that best meet their domestic priorities and enable access to knowledge for the world's citizens.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is pursuing a TPP agreement that will require signatory counties to adopt heightened copyright protection that advances the agenda of the U.S. entertainment and pharmaceutical industries, but omits the flexibilities and exceptions that protect Internet users and technology innovators.
The TPP will affect countries beyond the nine that are currently involved in negotiations. The new TPP agreement will build upon a 2005 agreement between New Zealand, Chile, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam (the P4 agreement) but will include more extensive provisions on intellectual property and other issues. The TPP will set rules that will likely be adopted initially by the 21 member economies in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. The TPP is being negotiated by 9 members of APEC, and negotiators plan to finalize the "TPP concept" at the APEC Economic Leaders meeting in November 2011.
Like ACTA, the TPP Agreement is a plurilateral agreement that will be used to create new heightened global IP enforcement norms. Countries that are not parties to the negotiation will likely be asked to accede to the TPP as a condition of bilateral trade agreements with the U.S. and other TPP members, or evaluated against the TPP's standards in the annual Special 301 process administered by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative."

Marco Rubio's Plan Could Cut Off Birth Control Coverage for Millions #p2 #tcot @gop
"A new bill introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a rising conservative star and leading contender for the Republican vice-presidential nomination in 2012, could cut off birth control coverage for millions of women who receive it through their health plans.
Rubio has sold his proposal—introduced January 31 as the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act," or S. 2043—as a way to counter President Barack Obama's controversial rule requiring even religiously-affiliated schools and universities to offer copay-free birth control to their employees. But health care experts say that its implications could be far broader.
If passed, the bill would allow any institution or corporation to cut off birth control coverage simply by citing religious grounds. (You can read the bill here or in the DocumentCloud embedbelow.) It has 26 cosponsors in the Senate; a similar proposal sponsored by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) has 148 cosponsors in the House. On Wednesday, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) vowed to repeal Obama's rule, and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)pointed to Rubio's bill as a potential model for doing so. "Chaim Levin's recent article and appearances on video and Jewish radio provide ample evidence of an agenda far more wide-ranging than merely opposing bullying and reparative therapy," said Rabbi Levin. "Urging youth to join in a group that identifies itself with Amalek-type behavior reinforces negative self-identification and more often than not results in sinful misbehavior." In the Talmud, the Amalek people are adversaries of the Hebrew tribes who try to thwart Judaism's rise."
John Wayne Gacy had accomplices for at least three of his murders
Today's lead story in the Sun-Times is about the possibility that serial killer John Wayne Gacy may have had at least an accomplice in three of his murders.
Criminal defense attorneys Robert Stephenson and Steven Becker re-examined the cases of Russell Nelson of Minneapolis, and Robert Gilroy and John Mowery of Chicago. they were among the 29 of Gacy's 33 victims found under the crawlspace of his Norwood Park home in 1979. Becker and Stephenson reviewed Gacy's work and travel records, which they say indicated he was out of town when Nelson and Gilroy disappeared. They also contend Gacy's work records didn't leave him enough time to abduct and kill Mowerey.
The evidence seems to strongly indicate Gacy had accomplices in the Gilroy and Nelson deaths. Stephenson said Gacy flew to Pittsburgh on Sept. 12, 1977 and returned to Chicago on Sept. 16, 1977. Robert Gilroy was reported missing Sept. 15, 1977.
Study: Education Gap Growing Between Rich, Poor #p2 #tcot
A new study suggests that the achievement gap between rich and poor students continues to grow wider, according to the New York Times.
Differences in achievements of rich and poor students have taken a back seat to the gap between black and white children in education in the last 60 years. But during that time period, the gap between the former groups has risen while the gap between the latter has narrowed.
"We have moved from a society in the 1950s and 1960s, in which race was more consequential than family income, to one today in which family income appears more determinative of educational success than race," said Sean F. Reardon, a Stanford University sociologist, to the New York Times.
Reardon authored a study that found the gap in standardized test scores between rich and poor students has increased by 40 percent in the last 50 years -- now double the testing gap between blacks and whites.
Senate Republicans push to weaken Violence Against Women Act #p2 #tcot @gop #WarOnWomen
What Republican war on women? The Violence Against Women Act was reauthorized in 2005 by unanimous consent in the Senate and with 415 votes in favor in the House, and signed by George W. Bush. It's up for reauthorization again now, and of course, this time, Republicans have a problem with it. The bill—which is actually cosponsored by Idaho Republican Sen. Mike Crapo—received no Republican votes in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Oh, they'll tell you they want to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act ... but of course, they want to do it their way. "The Republican opposition seems driven largely by an antigay, anti-immigrant agenda," a New York Times editorial explains:
The main sticking points seemed to be language in the bill to ensure that victims are not denied services because they are gay or transgender and a provision that would modestly expand the availability of special visas for undocumented immigrants who are victims of domestic violence — a necessary step to encourage those victims to come forward.

They'd be using such a statement as proof that Democrats are un-American and would demand his head on a platter. But if a conservative says the same thing, it's different. Take Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia for instance. During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing the conservative Justice observed that the Soviet Union's Constitution is better than the United States Constitution.

FAIRBANKS — Jason Weitzel '90 is not about the spectacle of dog racing. He chose to run this year's 2012 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race because it's a quieter event.
But the Two Rivers musher is stepping outside of his comfort zone to raise $10,000 for the Wounded Warriors Project, an organization with the purpose to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members as well as providing programs for those members of the military.
"I figure if I was going to go out and generate money, I'd rather go out and do it for someone else," Weitzel said.
"I needed the Quest to not just be about me, I needed something else to focus on — a driving force for me."
Weitzel, 39, and his wife, Susan Allmeroth, are both military veterans. Weitzel spent three years in the Army, stationed at Fort Irwin, Calif.
