The Romney Rule, defined: The idea that millionaires like Mitt should pay lower taxes than maids #P2 #TCOT

Can you imagine hearing Mitt Romney try to explain The Romney Rule—the idea he should
pay lower taxes than average Americans—to voters? (Brian Snyder/Reuters)

Greg Sargent, yesterday:
Paul Begala, responding to my post below about Priorities USA Action's attack on Mitt Romney over his wealth and tax rates, emails a new one:
The "Romney Rule" seems to be that millionaires like Mitt should pay a lower tax rate than maids.

This, of course, stands in stark contrast with The Buffett Rule: the idea that millionaires like Mitt should pay at least as much as average working Americans.

And given the fact that Mitt Romney doesn't merely oppose that idea but also personally benefits from his opposition (last year, his estimated tax rate was just 14% despite millions of dollars of income), if he becomes the nominee, he'll become the poster child of why we need The Buffett Rule—and his tax returns will be exhibit number one in the case against The Romney Rule.
