Newtown families scold senators

More than 30 family members of Newtown victims blasted lawmakers Thursday who have threatened to filibuster gun control legislation in the Senate.

"The senators who have vowed to filibuster this bill should be ashamed of their attempt to silence efforts to prevent the next American tragedy," read a statement signed by 33 family members of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. "Their staunch opposition to sensible gun reform is an affront to the 26 innocent children and educators who were murdered in Newtown."

The statement, circulated by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun violence group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, comes as the Senate prepares to take up gun control. Some GOP senators — including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) — earlier indicated that they would filibuster moving forward on such a bill, though backers of gun control legislation are hopeful that there are enough votes to overcome that.

On Wednesday, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) hammered out an agreement on background checks, earning praise from the Newtown families.
