Illinois continues to struggle to educate students who are poor, minority #p2

Out of the 491 Illinois schools that are at least 90 percent poor and 90 percent minority, only one has also managed to get 90 percent of its students to meet state testing standards.

  • Six of 15 convicted corrupt building and zoning inspectors allegedly used connections to get hired, according to a hiring "clout list" that was kept by the mayor's former patronage chief Robert Sorich.
  • Illinois will be getting some federal help to ease the cost of health care benefits for  retired state workers. The state has been accepted into a program that could reduce the state government's expenses by between $165 million and $211 million in the current fiscal year.
