Hamas — controversial.
Hummus? Not so much.
Unless it's the Sabra brand of the popular mashed chickpea dip.
As DePaul University students vote this week in the annual officer elections, they'll also be asked whether they want a replacement hummus brand served on campus.
Last year, students at Princeton University voted down a similar effort calling for the student government to ask campus cafeteria services to offer an alternative to Sabra, according to the New York Times.
Students for Justice in Palestine are behind the DePaul referendum. They say Sabra's parent company, the Strauss group, sends financial support to two Israeli military units accused of human rights abuses.
Trent Carl, a spokesman for the student group, said reactions on campus to the referendum have run the gamut from very supportive to indifferent to irate.
One former Israeli soldier started yelling at an SJP supporter Monday, Carl said.
"She asked him to walk away, and he screamed that she's a suicide bomber," Carl said.
The outcome of the referendum is nonbinding, said Robin Florzak, a DePaul spokeswoman.
