Dem ad: 'The Rand Paul Stomp' #p2

Kentucky Democrats are wasting no time making sure Bluegrass State voters know about the violent incident that marred Monday's Senate debate.

A new ad from the Kentucky Democratic Party titled "The Rand Paul Stomp," includes video of 23-year-old MoveOn.org activist Lauren Valle being wrestled to the ground by supporters of GOP nominee Rand Paul outside his debate this week with Democrat Jack Conway. The man who is seen stomping on Valle — including hitting her in the head — later identified as Tim Profitt, has since apologized for the incident but could still face criminal charges. The Paul campaign's first statement on the incident was tepid, suggesting "supporters of both sides" could be at fault. Paul later condemned the incident more forcefully, but Conway has said even Paul's amended statements still do not go far enough.

The 60-second ad lists programs Paul would "stomp" if he is elected — including ending student loans and protections for the disabled and "dump[ing] the Civil Rights Act" — as footage of the attack loops and a steady drumbeat plays in the background.

The ad's kicker: "Rand Paul. Stomping on you. Stomping on Kentucky."

The spot is currently available only on the Web, but the state party says it is moving quickly to get it on the air as soon as possible.
"It's a scary ad, but it's reflective of what actually happened," Matt Erwin, communications director for the state Democratic Party, told POLITICO. "It's a story that needs to be spread."
Erwin said that becuse of the ad's graphic nature, it will air on broadcast teleivion only after 10 p.m., likely starting Friday.
"We don't want to scare kids," said Erwin.

Paul's campaign has not yet responded to a request for comment on the ad, and Conway's campaign directed POLITICO to the state party for comment.

The new spot is the latest in a series of smash-mouth ads that has hit the contentious Kentucky Senate race. Conway's campaign released an earlier ad calling attention to Paul's alleged ties to a college secret society, asking, "Why did Rand Paul once tie a woman up, tell her to bow down before a false idol and say his god was Aqua Buddha?" Paul slammed Conway for the ad, saying it wrongfully attacked his religion. It his since been taken down.

Despite the controversy swirling around the stomping melee, Paul has opened up a wider lead over Conway. A Public Policy Polling survey earlier this week showed the Republican with a 13-percentage-point lead, and a CNN/Time/Opinion Research poll released Wednesday showed Paul leading Conway by 7 points.
