@sarahpalinusa - fyi America is “a fundamentally unjust and unequal country.” #p2 #tcot #gop

from http://firedoglake.com/2010/11/19/sarah-palin-refudiates-right-self/

In what appears to be a leaked excerpt from her new book, "America By Heart" (I say "appears" because I'm not 100% sold on the sourcing, but it certainly looks authentic), Sarah Palin takes a wild swing at liberals and Obamas, blissfully unaware that she's hitting herself and her fans too:

[The people who call Tea Partiers racist] think America — at least America as it currently exists — is a fundamentally unjust and unequal country. Barack Obama seems to believe this, too.  [Followed by gratuitous cheap shots about Michelle Obama not being proud of her country and Reverend Wright hating America and white people]

Well, first of all, America is "a fundamentally unjust and unequal country."  The educational, financial and employment systems are gamed in favor of the wealthy and connected.  The rich keep getting richer while everyone else runs in place or off a cliff.  The rule of law has gone out the window in Guantanamo and the mortgage servicing industry.  And gay Americans still can't serve openly in the military or get married in 45 out of 50 states.

But even if you adopt a purely conservative viewpoint, Palin's amazement that anyone could possibly find America "fundamentally unjust and unequal" is absurd.  We're talking about a political movement that's practically built around a sense of perpetual victimhood.  The government is taking your hard-earned money to give free education and health care to lazy moochers and illegal immigrants!  Out-of-control taxes and regulations are strangling hard-working business owners and destroying our jobs!  Liberal elitists are silencing conservatives in academia and Hollywood!  Political correctness and affirmative action are giving minorities and illegals and terrorists special treatment!

And then, of course, there's Sarah Palin herself, who loves to portray herself as a courageous, patriotic victim of a 24/7 smear campaign by "the lamestream media" and who quit her job as Governor of Alaska because she was supposedly  besieged by bogus investigations.  So obviously America has been pretty cruel to her, too.

Palin has accidentally stumbled upon one of the few things that progressives and conservatives can agree on: Life isn't fair.  Where we differ is on the race, gender, sexual orientation and income bracket of the people on the short end of the American stick.

  1. It's not just in Guantanamo that the rule of law has gone out the window: http://www.lewrockwell.com/roberts/roberts187.html
