Deep shutdown thoughts from America's Dumbest Congressman @replouiegohmert

from http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/10/15/1247532/-Deep-shutdown-thoughts-from-America-s-Dumbest-Congressman#

As the shutdown drags on, it occurs to me that we haven't checked in lately with America's Dumbest Congressman. Here he is at the Value Voters Summit last week, and I don't really think you can ask for any better explanation of where House Republicans are or just how—what's the word? Confident? Resolute? Ah, delusional. Delusional was the word I was looking for.

"The President and Harry Reid should not have shut this government down," said Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) during an afternoon question and answer session with Congressmen. "This has been coming for a long time … Democrats were waiting on a shutdown they could blame on Republicans."

A 17-year-old member of the audience from Ohio approached the mic and asked why the shutdown hasn't come to an end. "Once the President and Harry Reid see that the American public have seen through their smoke screen, that they are intentionally making americans suffer … you will see the shutdown come to an end overnight," Gohmert said.

"But Hunter," you may be saying, "this is Louie Gohmert, indisputably America's Dumbest Congressman and a possible sign of the imminent apocalypse. Surely his notions that the Democrats are to blame for the shutdown and will cave as soon as the American public discover this fantasy are not indicative of the wider party." Ah, but Gohmert is saying nothing here that the True Freaking Geniuses of the party, aka Ted Cruz and/or take-your-pick, have not also been saying. Even as polls show the GOP getting slammed on all fronts, even as story after story makes it clear just how much work the party put into ensuring a shutdown would take place, the House members who pressed for the shutdown have no plans for ending it.

Not the sign of a rational party, to be sure, but when your strategy for governing the nation is led by the Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Steve Stockman, Steve King, Michele Bachmann, Louie Gohmert wing of the party? Christ, fellas, you really can't complain when their first, last and only solution is to light everything on fire and call it done.
