The republican front runner at the time, Mr. 7 of 9, was involved in a sex scandal involving french sex clubs, tribbles, klingons, etc and had to leave the race. This propelled Obama to the front of the race and the republicans were left scrambling to find a viable candidate to run against Obama for IL's senate seat. Ditka was courted heavily to run but, wisely, chose not to, mostly due to the financial dosclosure involved and, frankly, a way to steep pay cut (da coach is making mad bank rightht now)....
